In Hokuto city, there are a large number of cherry blossom viewing spots. Four famous places above all others are, "Houki Temple", "Along River Ono", "the Matsumae's Hekirichijinya site" and " Kiyokawa's Thousands of cherry blossoms", It has been referred to as the "Hokuto Sakura Corridor" as it is possible to visit several places like a single stroke. The weeping cherry in Houki temple is about 300years old and is approximately 12meters high. As a result of the immense rarity of such a gigantic and beautiful weeping cherry in Hokkaido, it is also specialty of many towns with people coming from far to visit it.
About a 5 minute walk from Houki temple along river Ono, there is an unbroken line of Yoshino cherry trees which extends approximately 300metres.
About 10 minutes from there by car in the Matsumae's Hekirichijinya site is the highlight, a cherry tree tunnel which stretches for about 800m.
Kiyokawa Senbon-zakura is along Route 96 where local people have planted a 1.8km row of cherry blossom trees. During the cherry blossom season, there are three areas which are illuminated with the exception of Kiyokawa Senbon-zakura where you can enjoy fantastic evening cherry blossom viewing.
