Shikabe-cho, the leading southern Hokkaido hot spring town has hot spring sources in more than 30 locations.
A "Geyser" which even nationwide is very rare was accidently discovered while digging for a hot spring during the Taisho period.
A geyser is a hot spring in which water intermittently spurts out above the ground, Shikabe town's geyser spurts columns of water and steam into the air to a height of about 15 meters at roughly a 10 minute intervals.
"Michi-no-Eki Shikabe Geyser Park" is a facility where you will be able to fully enjoy the charm of this geyser.
Besides the comfortable and relaxing break room in the park, it is also enhanced by an exhibition corner which explains the mechanism by which a geyser works. Also popular in the park is the footbath which uses hot spring water from the geyser.
You can enjoy a footbath while gazing at the geyser eruptions.
It's a spot that you should stop by while out for a drive as it is a natural hot spring which works well on tired legs and loins as well being a benefit for nerve pain and excessive sensitivity to cold.
Furthermore "Michi-no-Eki Shikabe Geyser Park" was revamped and reopened on the 18th March 2016.
There is a product center "Shikabe/ Food and Delicacies Center" where such items as fresh fish are available which were landed in Shikabe-cho, and to start with seafood products, they have Shikabe town's specialty of "Shikabe cod roe".
Furthermore, in the local product center, the women of the Shikabe fishery cooperative have established the "hama no kaasan shokudo"(the seashore mothers' dining hall) where the specialty product group of mothers make such things as home cooked dishes using fish and shellfish landed in Shikabe-cho, It has been attracting attention as a hands-on facility to learn and savor Shikabe town's food culture.
