- Oshamambe Kani Meshi (Crab and Rice)(Oshamambe)
A specialty of Oshambe which was created in 1950.
Each store competes with their individual good taste.
The well-known "ekiben" (train station boxed meal), "Kani Meshi (crab and rice)" is a specialty of Oshambe-cho.
In the early Showa period, in order to be able to enjoy all year around the delicious taste of "boiled European crab" which was sold in the grounds of the train station, "Kanimeshi Honpo Kana Ya (crab and rice head office crab shop)" experimented with more than 50 variations and as a result of these experiments, they launched "Kani Meshi" in 1950.
The ingredients are spread out on top of rice, garnished with an assortment such as julienned strips of thin omelet, dried Japanese plums and shiitake mushrooms. It's a "bento" (Japanese lunch box) to savor the flavor of crab itself.
The inventor of "Kani Meshi"(crab and rice) was "Kanaya no Kani Meshi" but as they have authorized the use of the trademark for the commercial promotion of the town, nowadays such places as restaurants and drive through establishments in Oshamambecho are offering a lot of individual "Kani Meshi" meals.
Of course each shop offers take-away but instore it is possible to eat hot "Kani Meshi (crab and rice)"which has just been made.
By all means please try and compare the delicious characteristic flavors available at each store.
