The area surrounding Obihiro, Shiretoko and Kushiro(Eastern Hokkaido)
- Banei Horse Racing(Obihiro)
A leisure spot for the whole family where you can also watch the action at the world's only banei horse racing track
Obihiro Racecourse in Obihiro City is the only place in the world to hold banei horse racing. These races, which take place year-round, feature one-ton horses dragging up to one-ton iron sleds over two raised slopes over a straight 200-meter long track in a competition of strength and speed. You can watch the dynamic races unfold in front of you as well as run alongside the horses (on the spectator's side of the fence) cheering if you want.
Banei horse racing originally was used to compare the strength of farming horses during Hokkaido's pioneer days. Later it evolved into the current race format, which is now officially registered as a piece of Hokkaido heritage. In addition to the races, you can take the backyard tour to see the inspection area and other facilities or visit the Fureai Zoo where you can play with banei horses and ponies, providing fun for the whole family.
