Lake Furen, located at the base of the Nemuro peninsula, is a brackish lake (containing both freshwater and seawater) that is connected to the ocean in two locations at its center and southeast tip. It is known as one of Japan's largest breeding grounds for white swans. The untouched lake surroundings consist of a constantly changing expansive marsh, forest and sand dunes. This forms a paradise for waterfowl where you can observe approximately 310 species.

Michi-no-Eki Swan 44 Nemuro, located along National Route 44 at the gateway to Nemuro City, is a rest area used by countless travelers. The building has full height windows that provides stunning views of Lake Furen and Shunkunitai Bird Sanctuary. Here you will also find an information booth, fresh seafood for sale, and souvenir shops. The restaurant serving local Nemuro fair is also a popular draw.
